K9s for Warriors

Operation Overview

K9FW San Antonio, TX: where second chances are earned through training, trust, and a bond that heals both ends of the leash.

Both sides of the leash

At the K9s For Warriors campus in San Antonio, Texas, the focus is clear: rescue dogs, retrain them, and place them in the hands of veterans who need them most. But this isn’t just a training facility—it’s a space built for transformation.

From structured obedience sessions to free-play enrichment, every moment here balances discipline and joy. Because happy dogs learn better. And veterans connect more deeply with dogs that are thriving. The Petco Love K9 Center isn’t just where the journey begins for rescue dogs—it’s where they’re reminded how to be dogs again.

“We have an entire enrichment program… if a dog is not happy, you’ll never get a full quality-trained service dog.”

— Randy Blanchard, K9 Programs Mgr.

Warrior training

Just down the path, Warrior Ranch welcomes up to five veterans at a time into a fully immersive, on-campus experience. For two weeks, they live onsite, learn to handle their dogs, and take part in an intensive bonding and training process.

With nearly a one-to-one staff-to-veteran ratio, each warrior gets hands-on guidance—learning how to lead, trust, and heal alongside their future service dog.

From Withdrawn to Reconnected

The change doesn’t just happen in the dogs.

Veterans often arrive quiet, closed off—deeply introverted after years of carrying invisible wounds. But the steady, consistent presence of a service dog draws them outward. Slowly, they begin to engage. To laugh. To trust again. And often, to open up in ways they haven’t in years—sometimes, in ways they never thought possible.
